Four Key Points for Customizing a Hygienic High-Viscosity Rotor Pump
When food, pharmaceutical or chemical industries need to transfer high-viscosity products (syrup, honey, paste, emulsion) under hygienic conditions, rotor pump customization goes beyond just flow rate.
In food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, transferring high-viscosity products such as syrup, honey, sauce and emulsion — the rotor pump is a mainstream choice. But when the customer requires "hygienic grade + high viscosity + special connections", selection is not as simple as looking at flow rate alone. Hebei Guangteng Machinery summarizes four key points:
1. Material: 316L stainless steel is the hygienic standard. All product-contact parts should be 316L stainless steel — corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, meeting food/pharmaceutical-grade hygiene requirements. In some applications 304 is sufficient, depending on the product's corrosiveness.
2. Sealing: Double mechanical seals for crystallizing or particle-containing products. Standard single mechanical seals tend to leak with viscous, easily crystallized products. A double mechanical seal adds a second barrier, suitable for more demanding transfer duties.
3. Thermal insulation: Heating/cooling jackets selected by product temperature needs. When the product requires temperature maintenance (e.g. constant 42 °C transfer) or cooling, the pump body can be fitted with a heating/cooling jacket — circulating hot water, steam or coolant to keep the product temperature stable and prevent viscosity fluctuations from affecting transfer.
4. Connections: Tri-clamp fittings for fast disassembly and cleaning. Hygienic production lines commonly use Tri-clamp (clamp-type) connections — tool-free disassembly, no hygiene dead corners, and compatible with CIP cleaning. Standard sizes range from 1.5" to 4" (4" = DN100; custom clamp sizes available on request).
Viscosity-speed matching reference: For medium-to-high viscosity products (e.g. 20,000–22,000 cP range), the corresponding speed is about 150–200 rpm. It is better to run slower rather than faster, to reduce shear and wear.
In short: first state the product type, viscosity, temperature, flow rate and connection requirements, then determine material, seal type, jacket and speed — once all parameters are complete, custom manufacturing can begin.
