CIP design and export documentation: what EU and US buyers actually check
Food-contact declarations, sanitary pipework, CE technical files and cleaning validation — a practical checklist for machinery exporters.
Exporting filling machinery into EU and US food plants is as much a documentation exercise as an engineering one. Buyers and auditors typically request food-contact material declarations, electrical safety evidence and a cooperation path to the CE technical file before equipment is even uncrated.
From a design standpoint, auditors look for self-draining pipework, minimised product traps, accessible wetted parts and genuine CIP capability rather than a label on a brochure. Quick-release clamps and visible return paths reduce both cleaning time and audit findings.
It is important to use precise language: a machine can be engineered and documented to support CE marking and FDA-aligned food-contact reviews, but the final placing-on-market responsibilities sit with the responsible legal entity in the destination market.
During supplier evaluation, request example documentation packs rather than certificates alone: material declarations for wetted components, surface-finish specifications, electrical schematics to the agreed standard, and a written changeover and cleaning description.
